Express Proofreading

When a document is completed and polished, this proofread involves a quicker turnaround time, checking for minor remaining errors.

Basic Proofreading:

This type of proofreading involves having a proof copy against which a new copy is compared, to ensure that the second copy is reproduced exactly to match the original.  This includes line-by-line comparison with the original document to check spelling, typos, punctuation, capitalization errors, and formatting.

Basic manuscript copy edit/proofread

This level of editing checks grammar, spelling, punctuation, typos, awkward phrasing, and other writing mechanics such as consistency in headers, page numbering, word and page breaks, font size, quotations and references, margins, and so on. The client may specify a preferred style guide (e.g. Chicago, AP, CP), which I will follow during the edit. There may also be a level of basic fact checking and cross referencing, and I may notify the author or designer of potential layout problems. I would discuss any major change with the client before possible implementation. A very significant change may result in a Deep Edit or Rewrite (see below), with the client’s agreement.

Content, substantive or structural edit

This type of editing checks the logical flow of the content in your document. (For example, does the information in chapter 7 more logically belong in chapter 2?) The structural edit helps make sure your conclusions follow accurately and your argument makes coherent sense, and that all information is clear and concise. It checks to see that your plot develops believably. (For example, does a character have blue eyes in chapter 3 and brown in chapter 6? Has a plot point been dropped without explanation in the middle of the story?) The purpose of a structural or substantive edit is, most of all, to make your document easy to read.

Deep Edit/Rewrite

If the manuscript has significant problems involving logic, style, or clarity, with the client’s agreement I will make the necessary structural or linguistic changes. I may suggest areas that need rewriting, and may even contribute in a small way to the writing itself. I may suggest further research needs, and help devise an outline for restructuring the document. The purpose of any of these tasks will be to make the manuscript as clear and readable as possible.

Manuscript Submission

For a non-fiction manuscript, sometimes the book proposal is almost as complex and time-consuming as the writing of the manuscript itself. I will help you research the background information you need, and create the proposal to be sent to the agent or publisher. If you have completed a fiction manuscript, I will properly format the initial pages or chapters according to the agent’s or publisher’s guidelines, and create the documents necessary to make the submission.

Writing Services

Report writing

You provide the information to go into the report, and a sample of the required report format, and I will create the report for you.

Blog and article writing

As with report writing, if you provide the basic information you want posted in a blog entry, I will create the post for you. I also write articles, under my name, as publishable content.

Writing Assistance

I will go over your document to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the writing, pointing out areas of difficulty. I will rework the language to help make it clear, interesting, and grammatically correct.

Ghost Writing

This is similar to what is done with report and blog writing: you provide the information that needs to be included in your (non-fiction) book, and I will write the book for you. Fees will depend on the size of the project.
